Franky Tsang, Beani wedding photography

A Little About Beani wedding photography

Franky Tsang, also known as Beani, was born in Hong Kong and moved to Sydney in 1984. Franky started off with a Certificate in Graphic Design at First Design College, Hong Kong. Followed by a Master of Multimedia Design at the University of Sydney in 2001. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems from the University of New South Wales in 2005. He has also worked as a designer since 1994 in both print and web designs.

Franky’s passion for photography started at an early stage of life. His childhood memories consist of sneaking into his uncle’s professional darkroom where he used to admire those negatives hanging on the wall. The distinctive smell of film chemicals fascinated him to this interest.

Besides working as a web designer, wedding photography become his profession since 2009. His photography has been published in various magazines, newspapers and websites across the country, and has been recognised by national and international awards.

Specialising in portraiture, Franky developed his own unique style in capturing people behind the camera. Acting as a medium, his concentration and enthusiasm for the moment provided an instant connection between his images and his subjects. As a result, memorable images were produced which conveyed the true meaning and feeling of the subject itself – The Moment.

My Favorite Quote

I believe that photography is about the essence of the moment – not simply sharpness and exposure. My objective is for the viewer to feel the emotion, attitude and the character residing in my subject.

I am a Sydney based wedding photographer. I have a passion for capturing couples in-love. It is my honour to photograph special life events where two people decided to spend the rest of their lives together. I have shoot weddings all over Australia, Asia and have won awards nationally and internationally for portrait and wedding photography.

Your wedding day is one of the most special events that you will have in your lifetime. My aim is to capture the essence of your wedding day and record the memories naturally without being intrusive.

On the big day, my approach will be relaxing, creative and most important – FUN. I will capture images with a mixture of formal, candid and photojournalistic styles. It will then be created into high quality professional images.

Wedding photography is a worthwhile expense. Years down the road, how would you tell your friends, children and even grandchildren your wedding day stories? It won’t be the same without seeing the actual images that you can treasure for a lifetime. It is very important to choose the right photographer whose style and final product you will be happy with. We use Queensberry to produce your wedding album. Since 1969, their albums were carefully hand made till today. You will also receive all the high resolution images in a DVD, with all our packages.

If you have any questions, here is the Q&A. If we are unable to answer your questions, or if you would like to book an appointment, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Estee and James

Finding someone to document one of the most emotional days of your life is a tricky thing. From looking at Franky’s site we were impressed most by his work, and then by the information he provided about how he works. On the wedding day itself Franky’s talent and skill were evident from the moment he showed up. We did quite a few things differently to what you would expect from a wedding, but Franky was unfazed and took everything as it was and in his stride. His presence was a lovely balance of fun and professional and he made 2 fairly camera-shy people feel not only at ease, but actually enjoy the process of being photographed. He was incredibly thorough in his documentation as well; thanks to Franky we have so many beautifully captured moments of that splendid day.

Tilda & Harvey

Getting married is huge in anyone’s life and finding the perfect person to capture and record the special moments is probably the most important aspect to any wedding! Through a friend’s recommendation and after trawling through Franky’s previous work, we decided to book him in because from our very first meeting, he made both Harvey and I feel so at ease and comfortable. Franky was extremely professional, where he took the time to understand what it is we want for the wedding, along with the feel and theme of the photos we have in mind. Franky offered a lot of great suggestions without being at all overbearing and his ideas were highly appreciated, which gave us further peace of mind, as it highlighted his experience in wedding photography.

Both Harvey and I are not ‘naturals’ in front of the camera but Franky and his team had the knack to bring out the most natural and wonderful reactions from both Harvey and myself. Nothing was ever too much an ask of Franky and his enthusiasm and sense of humour easily rubbed off on us throughout the day, with the results certainly speaking for themselves. We are so pleased with the outcome and we would recommend Franky and his wonderful team to anyone!

Angela & Tim

Frankie, just want to say a huge thank you for the great photos you took for our pre-wedding. We were very impressed with the way you effortlessly captured the mood perfectly. Not only were the pictures taken brilliantly, it was also a lot of fun and running around with you guys. You made it a n unforgetable experience for us. Thanks again from Tim and Angela.

Ineke & Ben

The best, most passionate and dedicated photography team ever = 1 hour sleep only + twisted ankle !! My four thumbs up for Beani & his incredible team ! :)

Elaine & Andrew

Thank you so much for capturing all the wonderful memories from our wedding day and your tireless effort at our pre-wedding sessions.

We were looking for a photographer that could give us an artistic and creative edge, and more importantly translate the passion for photography through their work and you’ve simply ticked all the boxes.

We were really impressed with your creativity and fresh fun ideas (you don’t recreate or repeat the same poses with other couples like some photographers do) and your patience, confidence and the desire for perfection had us at ease from the moment we met you.

We love your work, your creativity, flexible and carefree passion across all areas of photography from weddings to portraits to everyday street shots.

We look forward to seeing more of your work online and art galleries!

Q&A

Q&A

What type of photography do you do?

Franky covers weddings in a very journalistic way but doesn’t think photography should be limited by a “genre.” While he is very hands-off and unobtrusive in his coverage of the day he does believe that there is a time and place for gorgeous, casually posed images of the bride and groom together. So while he won’t stop you and make you pose while cutting the cake, he would like about an hour (or more!) alone with you both (if possible) sometime during the day to capture some images of you without your wedding party or guests looking on. Franky also believes strongly in preserving all of the details of the wedding; from your cake to your shoes, so his work is very flush with detail images. His images of the guests at the wedding are almost 100% journalistic and he won’t stop the entire table at the reception and make them pose for “table shots”, preferring instead to capture them laughing, smiling, dancing, drinking, and having a great time.

Do you still take posed family images?

Absolutely. Franky strongly believes in those family images, as they are records of your entire family at an important time in their history together. A few weeks before your wedding he will sit down with you and go through the list of shots on your day – these are the family groupings that Franky traditionally photographs at each wedding he covers. Please bear in mind that the hallmark of Franky’s coverage is journalistic and real-time, so a very long list of posed images will hinder his ability to cover the event in a documentary manner.

Franky also print out 4R photos at the end of the reception for your guests to bring home, for details please contact us in here.

Do you work with a second shooter?

Yes, Franky will be the major photographer of the day and the second shooter only work under his instruction. He also brings an assistant who helps with gear, lighting, and managing groups for family.

Where do you live? You travel?

Franky lives in Sydney, Australia. Franky is very comfortable traveling for events. Rest assured that should you commission Franky to cover your wedding and travel to you then you are hiring someone very experienced with travel for business. Travel is billed very simply – if airfare and hotel and rental car are needed all you are responsible for is a direct reimbursement for the charges.

Does he have an assistant?

Yes

How long does it take to get our products and images?

Online galleries are posted within six weeks of the wedding date. Printed proofs and the digital files are available within nine weeks of the wedding date. Upon final approval of album designs most albums are ready for delivery within twelve weeks.

How many pictures will we get?

The number of photographs taken depends on many things – the number of guests, hours of coverage, types of events. Our bare minimum is 500 images, but often it’s much, much higher.

Do we get to keep the negatives?

We provide the selected, edited high-resolution digital files (the digital equivalent of negatives). When the files are released to you, we will provide you with a list of resources from which to get quality prints if you so desire. We do retain the copyright to the images and the right to use them for promotional purposes, competition, professional review, and so on. If you need we are glad to provide you with a written release that will allow you to make unlimited personal reproductions and copies for your friends and families.

How does the album design process work?

Franky gives you a year to make your album selections before the book is subject to a fee due to increases in yearly production costs. You do get to preview your album design and make three rounds of changes to it before a change-fee is assessed. Once you approve the layout Franky will help you choose your album cover style, color, imprinting, and other small details. Then you’ll sign off on the book and it will go to print. Once you choose your images it takes about four weeks to produce your first draft and each round of changes generally takes two business weeks to complete.

What will my album look like?

You have two choices – in a traditional style book your images are printed on photographic paper and set down in mats. The pictures and the pages are separate from each other. This is the look of most older wedding albums where the images were inset into the pages. In a modern book the images are printed directly onto the pages, much like in a coffee table book you’d buy at the bookstore.

What is proofbook?

A proof book is a record of all photos in thumb nail sizes on your wedding day. It is useful for you as a record of all that happened from the moment we started shooting to the time we say our goodbyes to you at the end of the day. Furthermore, it will assist you in selecting photos for your photo album.

What is the online gallery?

The online gallery is a private, password protected section on our website where all of your wedding photographs will be placed online for you and your family and friends to view. It is also a secure shopping cart – which allows you (and your family and friends) to order prints and cards and select album prints online. All you have to do is provide the password to anyone who you want to be able to view the images.

Do you do engagement (Pre-wedding) sessions?

Yes

Do you have insurance?

Yes

What kind of equipment do you use?

Top of the line professional Leica and Canon equipments with extensive backups, and Broncolor studio flashes.

My venue needs a certificate of insurance or third party liability. Can you provide that?

Yes

Can you hold the date for me?

I’m sorry, but we can’t hold the date or pencil you in. To be fair to everyone we can’t “hold” a date without a retainer and a signed contract. We accept bookings on a first come/first served basis.

What is your payment schedule like?

A booking fee/retainer is due to reserve your date. The remainder is due the week prior to your wedding.

Can we pay you part of the amount after the wedding?

No, I’m sorry, but we do require full payment before the event.

I have to cancel my wedding. Can I have my retainer back?

No you cannot. The retainer fee and all monies paid are non-refundable. The retainer guarantees that we will hold the date exclusively for you and once you’ve signed the contract we do turn down all other commissions for that date.

What if you, like, die?

If Franky dies we can guarantee he will not be at your wedding – which would be rather sad. However, we will still supply you with coverage from our contracted assistant or second shooter (based on your contract). Franky is also a member of many national and local organizations and networking groups upon which we could call to find you a replacement photographer.

If we decide to commission Franky for our wedding, when should we book?

ASAP. Since we cannot “hold” dates or “pencil you in” dates are booked when…well, when they’re booked. Most of Franky’s commissions contract him within a year of the wedding date, sometimes as close as two months prior, sometimes a full calendar year or more in advance.

If we run overtime, will you stay?

Surely. Franky does have an overtime rate and it goes into effect only with your permission and approval that he continue coverage. He will bill you for those hours after you return from your honeymoon.

Do you offer discounts for off-season or non-saturday events?

Occasionally discounts are available but are based on time of year, Franky’s travel schedule, and availability. If you have concerns about your budgetary needs, please contact the studio and let us know.

Do we need to feed you at the reception?

(many caterers offer “vendor meals” as an add-on option) but feeding Franky ensures he stays cheerful, mobile, and that he doesn’t faint from starvation or waste away in a very tragic manner. We prefer to be fed when you are fed, not afterwards, because when you are eating you’re not at your most photogenic. And when you’re done, we want to be done as well to continue your coverage.

Can our family and friends take pictures with their cameras? Will that bother you?

Of course they can and it doesn’t bother Franky in the least bit! He does request they not swarm the family photographs right away because he’d prefer all eyes facing him in your images, but he doesn’t mind at all if they snap away from the background. Franky does not allow family or friends to come along for the bridal images or the images of you two alone for privacy purposes and because, frankly, other people can be distracting! He welcomes other cameras during dancing, cake cutting, and other events just asks politely if people could please not push him out of the way and respect his presence.
